Young Baker achieves Runner-up prize at Baking Industry Awards Gala night

12th September 2016

One of our aspiring bakers, Beth came runner up at the renowned Rising Star award of the Baking Industry Awards. After many challenging stages of application and interviews to be nominated as a finalist, she was presented her award by Rugby Union World Cup player Matt Dawson who now appears on A Question of Sport as a team captain.

Beth attended the Moulin Rouge themed evening at London Hilton on Park Lane where over a thousand guests from the baking industry elite had gathered to celebrate the glamorous event with host Matt Dawson. Beth attended as guest of former Baker of the Year winner Piero Scacco who personally sponsored her category of the Rising Star Award. From the champagne reception, casino experience and Cancan girls’ performance, the whole evening truly was a night to remember.

Beth said: “The Awards Evening was the icing on the cake and the whole experience had been amazing. “I felt really proud to have achieved this recognition and was really pleased that my mum had been able to join me for the night and share in my success.” As a young employee here at Bells, since the age of 16 she has successfully progressed to Line Supervisor and has made the most of her opportunities through the Bakery Apprenticeship Programme, funded by Bells. She added: “It has been a great boost to be among the leading young bakers in the country and has given me more confidence in my own ability and development.”

Philip, Operations Director, said: “It is a fantastic achievement and a great reward for all Bethany’s hard work. “She has made the most of her opportunities and has really benefited from the Apprenticeship programme. “I feel sure that she will continue to develop further in our business along with the other young rising stars we have here at Lazonby”

Beth now hopes to inspire other young people to become involved in baking. She has already taken part in local school presentations, helped some of our work experience students, judged at various school bake off competitions at our local schools and has also loved the increased responsibility we have given her.
